Estate Planning, Trusts and Estate Administration

Julie has over fifteen years of experience advising individuals and couples with regard to their estate planning needs and tax-savings techniques.  She has advised every type of client, from single individuals, to same-sex and opposite-sex couples; from young families needing to appoint guardians and set up trusts for their young children to retirees who want to gift to family members while still ensuring they have sufficient assets for their own needs; and from modest clients who want “simple wills” with no trusts to wealthy clients who need to set up tax-savings vehicles and plan to engage in charitable giving, while still retaining sufficient wealth to meet their goals with respect to their own family.  As a fellow pet-owner and animal-lover, she also enjoys working with clients to plan the future care of their pets, whether through their wills or a pet trust. Julie also has expertise in administering estates in Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, and New York.  She typically represents the estate, filing necessary court paperwork, advising the estate as to post-mortem estate and tax planning, and preparing and filing estate tax returns.  She has also represented interested persons in estate litigation matters, advising clients as to their legal rights and working to reach a fair resolution.

Tax-Exempt Organizations and Non-Profits

Julie advises non-profits with regard to corporate formation and existence within Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, and New York.  She also assists non-profit organizations in obtaining tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service, including 501(c)(3) and (c)(4) organizations, and represents tax-exempt organizations to ensure compliance with the Internal Revenue Code and IRS procedures.

Small Business Practice

Julie assists individuals looking to set up small businesses in entity choice, formation, and all associated legal representation.  She also represents existing businesses with regard to tax and corporate issues, including compliance, licensing, insurance, or litigation.  Julie and her partner can assist small businesses with assessment of internal controls, and response to concerns regarding employee embezzlement, or other fraud risks suffered by small businesses in particular.

B-Corp Practice

In addition, Julie and the law firm assist for-profit businesses in qualifying for Benefit (“B”) Corporation status within Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, or New York.  B Corporations are a unique class of corporations that hold themselves out as creating a material positive impact on society and the environment, allow those in fiduciary roles to consider non-financial interests when making decisions, and report on their overall social and environmental performance using recognized third party standards.
